Construction on Hartselle's $12 million library and event venue is expected to enter the construction phase in January, while the city's new fire station could open that same month, officials said Thursday during the annual State of the City breakfast. Mayor Missy Evans joined Engineering Director Ben Wood, Development Director Jeremy Griffith and Police Chief Alan McDearmond for a discussion of city projects, economic development, traffic concerns and plans for future growth. One of my favorite events in the fall growing up was to go watch the grinding of sugar cane and sorghum stalks. It was a community event in southern communities. After the first cold spell, the cane stalks would 'sugar up' and were ready for grinding. A large iron mill was set up with a pole attached to the top called the sweep. The pole was attached to a horse or mule, that would walk in a circle around the mill, turning the gears that crushed up the cane stalks. The green juice of th...
Well, before long it'll be mid-term election time. Some that have made promises to change our lives like never before will get a hat full of votes and have to prove they can keep their word, while others will have the luxury of never having to do what they said they would, forever making us wonder if they would have. I probably should, but I don't pay much attention to politics these days, but if I did, I thought it'd be good to let everyone know some of the things I'd run on. My chief...

As the air turns cooler and the leaves begin to change their colors, I’m reminded of past years when our family or church groups took trips to places where the colors were expected to be spectacular. Alabama has some really great places to view large areas of tree color in the fall. Mentone, Little River Canyon, Buck’s Pocket, Cheaha Mountain State Park, and Guntersville offer impressive views from high elevations that look out across large, forested areas. When I was younger, our fami...
Photos by Rachel Howard/RAW Images A longtime idea at Sanctuary Community Church has taken shape in the form of The Well, a new Hartselle coffee shop where faith, family and community are central to the mission. Located inside the Pentecostal church on Main Street West, The Well pairs coffee and house-made syrups with European-inspired décor and a story that began nearly nine years ago, when Sanctuary Community Church was built. The church’s pastoral family, the Britts, had the idea fo...

Officer Camron Williams received the Officer of the Quarter Award, an honor determined by a vote of his fellow officers. Police Chief Alan McDearmond praised Williams for offering constructive ideas, including a recommendation that the department acquire additional less-lethal equipment. Officer Jeffery Curtis received a Certificate of Acco...
K&K’s Smash Burgers and Southern Food has announced plans to open a brick-and-mortar location in Hartselle in early 2027. Life changes quickly. Jobs change. Rela tionships change. Health changes. Plans change. People change. Sometimes, the things we assumed would always be there suddenly aren't. That's one reason David's description of God in Psalm 18:2 is so powerful: 'The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer.' A rock is stable. David's life certainly wasn't. He experienced enemies, danger, betrayal, family difficulties, personal failure and uncertainty. Yet, beneath everything changing aroun...
Dear reader, It’s hard to believe we’ve already reached the final months of another year. November and December always seem to arrive with full calendars and long to-do lists. There are Thanksgiving meals to plan, Christmas gifts to buy, homes to decorate and gatherings to squeeze into already-busy weeks. But somewhere in the middle of all that activity are some of the moments I think we’ll remember most. These last months of the year give us a chance to look back at where we’ve been a...
Photos by Rachel Howard/RAW Images When members of the Hartselle High School band take the field at J.P. Cain Stadium, the audience sees the musicians, majorettes and color guard performing under the Friday night lights. What spectators may not see are the volunteers who arrived hours earlier to stock and operate the concession stands, the parents who hauled equipment, the volunteers who helped move pit equipment on and off the field and the people who will still be working long after ...
