DEAR ABBY: I'm an ophthalmologist, a physician who specializes in medical and surgical eye care, and I'm hoping you can help me debunk a common myth about eye health. Many assume eye disease happens only to older adults. While age does increase the risk of developing certain vision-threatening diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts, younger people can also develop vision-threatening eye conditions.

Dear Heloise: As a follow-up to the hint about using newspaper bags for doggie cleanup bags, I, too, use them for this purpose. Dear Heloise: Using a sealed bin helps to keep mice out, but it doesn't always work. The smell of birdseed can get through plastic, and mice are persistent. What finally did the trick for me was putting a lavender room freshener inside the bin, tucked in a corner away from the seed bag. There's no contact with the seed, so there's no risk of contamination -- just a scent that mice seem to hate. I actually like the smell, so it's a win for me.
